What situations require emergency veterinary care?
We understand that it can be challenging to know when emergency care is required for your pet. Below are some examples of situations that may require emergency veterinary care.
- Severe bleeding or bleeding that doesn't stop
- Obvious signs of pain or extreme anxiety
- Choking, difficulty breathing, or continuous coughing/gagging
- Fractured bones or severe lameness
- Seizures and/or staggering
- Bleeding from nose, mouth, rectum, or blood in the urine
- Inability to urinate or pass feces, or pain associated with urinating or passing feces
- Severe vomiting or diarrhea; 2+ episodes in 24-hours
- Injuries to the eye(s)
- Your pet has ingested something poisonous (such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rodent poison, etc.)
- Heat stress or heatstroke
- Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more
- Unconsciousness

Do I need to call ahead?
Our team at Arnprior Animal Hospital makes every effort to provide emergency and urgent veterinary care during our regular clinic hours, but more often, we will refer you directly to a 24-hour emergency hospital in the area. As such, it is always best to contact us in advance to ensure that you are being directed to the correct clinic in a timely manner.

How long will we have to wait to be seen?
Veterinary emergency hospitals operate in a similar way to a human doctor's office. It can be unpredictable, and you may have to wait.
It simply isn't possible to predict what cases will arrive at an emergency veterinarian on any given day. This is why it is important to call ahead. If you call our veterinary hospital, we will refer you to an emergency clinic close by with availability.

What happens if my pet needs to stay in the hospital?
Some veterinary emergencies require intensive overnight care. At Arnprior Animal Hospital, if your pet has come to us in an emergency situation, we will facilitate a transfer to a 24-hour emergency pet hospital close by so they can be monitored overnight.

Our veterinarians are primarily experienced with cats and dogs. Please call ahead to find out if we are able to care for your sick or injured pet. Please note that while we try to accommodate pets in need whenever possible, we may need to refer you to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital.
