In-House Diagnostic Testing for Ottawa Valley Dogs & Cats
At Arnprior Animal Hospital, we use diagnostic tools to assess your dog or cat’s health, enabling us to accurately identify and treat a wide range of medical issues.
These insights into your pet’s internal systems allow us to catch health problems in their early stages and create a treatment plan before conditions worsen.
Early diagnosis not only boosts your pet’s chances of a full recovery but also enhances their overall well-being. It can also help reduce the risk of spreading contagious illnesses to other animals, promoting a safer, healthier environment for all pets and their families.

Our Diagnostic Services
At Arnprior Animal Hospital, our in-house lab is equipped with the following technology to help us diagnose your pet's condition and treat them in a timely manner:
- Radiography (Digital X-rays)
Radiography is a safe, painless, and non-invasive procedure, and we utilize low-stress, hands-free protocols to make it as comfortable as possible for your pet. This digital X-ray technology also uses such low doses of radiation that it can safely be used on pregnant females and very young pets.
We use radiographs to evaluate bones and organs or to diagnose conditions including broken bones, chronic arthritis, bladder stones, spinal cord diseases and some tumours.
- Digital Dental X-Rays
If your cat or dog has developed periodontal disease, much of this damage occurs below the gum line where it can't be easily seen. Digital X-rays allow our team to examine the roots, bones and internal anatomy of your cat or dog's teeth.
With digital dental X-rays, the risk of radiation exposure for your pet is significantly lower than with traditional X-ray technology.
- Ultrasound
With ultrasound imaging, we expose a part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the internal structures. Because we capture ultrasound images in real time, we can see the structure and movement of your pet's internal organs, as well as blood flowing through the blood vessels.
- Bloodwork
At our vet lab in Arnprior, we can run a range of common and specialized blood tests to assess your pet's health and help diagnose illness.
Our complete blood count (CBC) includes red and white blood cell counts, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, and platelets.
Blood chemistry profiles provide information on vital organ function, including the kidneys and liver.
We also offer in-house SNAP ELISA tests, such as 4DX, parvovirus, and FeLV/FIV, as well as specialized testing for thyroid function and fructosamine levels.
- Urinalysis
A urinalysis is a key diagnostic test that provides your veterinarian with essential insights into the physical and chemical properties of your pet's urine.
A urinalysis is primarily used to assess the health of your furry friend's kidneys and urinary tract system. However, a urinalysis can also be very helpful in detecting issues in other organ systems and is important for the diagnosis of metabolic diseases such as diabetes.
- Fecal Exams
A fecal exam is a diagnostic test used to identify and treat any gastrointestinal (GI) infections that could be compromising your pet's health. Fecal exams also allow your veterinarian to determine if your pet has intestinal parasites such as roundworms or hookworms.
- Microscope
We have an in-house microscope that allows us to examine cytology samples on-site, including ears, skin, and fine needle aspirates. This enables quick and accurate evaluation of your pet’s condition without waiting for external lab results.
In-House Veterinary Pharmacy
Once we diagnose your companion's condition, your veterinarian can prescribe and supply the medications needed to help resolve or manage your pet's issue.
When it's time to renew your pet's prescription, let us know. We can have their medicine ready and waiting for you when you come in.
